Pope Benedict XVI, who was elected in 2005, is to resign as head of the Catholic church. The 85-year-old pontiff, the first pope to resign in 600 years, is reported to be stepping down due to his advanced age. The Vatican hopes to replace Benedict XVI by the end of March.
